Our garden has started producing vegetables! We’ve been eating lots of delicious cucumbers and cherry tomatoes right out of our backyard. The zucchini plant has some baby zucchinis on them that will soon be part of our dinner. Our acorn squash plants has lots of flowers still but no signs of squash life yet.
Emily loves going into the garden with her shovel while I weed. Now that the plants are rather big she is good about being careful around them and only weeding the small plants. She is also making the connection that food comes from our backyard and she will go out and check the plants with me. So far she has consumed all of the cherry tomatoes except four that I grabbed for a quick taste.
When we planted everything in the garden this year the goal was to just get it in the ground. We’ve already learned some things; the cucumbers shouldn’t be plants right next to the tomatoes and they should probably switch places. The zucchini needs a little more room away from the fence and gate door. The spinach, kale, and swiss chard just need their own patches, also away from the cucumbers.
While Emily and I were in Iowa last week, Andrew picked a cucumber that was 1.5 feet long! This years record so far. With all of the rain we’ve been having our garden has been growing like a jungle.
