I washed the first layer of sand out of Emily’s hair tonight, the last night before Andrew returns from a week long trip to New Orleans. Then the three of us gathered around a container of blueberries and ate them one by one, watching the diagonal rain and listening to the whooshing wind. Two exhausted children mesmerized. Humble dinner beginnings soon to be followed by yogurt, granola and grilled cheese sandwich for a starving girl (I told her I was too tired to make a grilled cheese sandwich and she replied, “I believe in you. I will help you. Let’s do it together!”).
The blueberries Emily fed me tasted the sweetest, and I loved seeing her delight from the ones I popped into her mouth. Nathan took care of the squishy ones for us, exploding them with his bottom teeth and making quick work of the insides.
I needed this week. I needed a slow simple night.
I’m thrilled Andrew is coming back tomorrow.
