Yesterday we joined our friends the Tates for family home evening! Andrea and I have known each other since we were in elementary school and it is so fun to live close to each other after we were separated by family moves in 2004. They invited us over to carve HUGE pumpkins that were grown by David’s family. We all took turns learning new things about pumpkin carving and here are a few of our collective discoveries: using a spoon gets seeds out faster than using your hands; you thin out the side of the pumpkin that you are going to carve so that it is easier to cut through; you can print out pictures to use as a pattern and tape it to the pumpkin; before you cut the pumpkin you poke holes around the outline so that you have a guide when you are cutting.
Here we are hard at work! I scraped out the seeds (or most of them) and Andrew did the part that involved a knife because I still really only have one hand at 100%.
Here is the planned zombie arm fighting its way out of the earth. This was Andrew’s idea, but I think my arm was the original inspiration…
And the final product:
Notice the flesh falling off of the hand.
We finished the night off with some wonderful brownies. Hope your pumpkin carving experience was just as fun!
