Andrew and I have been talking about the importance of what we put on our walls. We want to put things up that will influence our children and ourselves in positive ways, things that will be imprinted in our minds from seeing them so often.
One concept that I really want us to remember is that we have a lot of control over our own happiness. There are trials and hardships and sometimes we just need to be sad, but when it comes to everyday normal life, I hope we will use our agency to make our own happiness. I was really excited to discover this print from Alexa Z Design – it is the perfect message from our living prophet. Emily was thrilled to help me hang it up and afterwards she clapped and said, “Yaaaay”. Some mornings when we are walking down the stairs she has me read it over and over – not what I was planning but a great side effect!
As a side note, that $1 fake plant from the dollar store is part of me making happiness. I love looking at that little bit of green knowing I won’t kill it from neglect in two months when I’m just trying to keep myself, a newborn, and toddler alive. It really can be the little things.
I’ve discovered that another part of making happiness is being willing to just jump in and try, not being so worried about making things perfect or failing (or thinking that I’ll have more energy another time), that I don’t even start. As a helpful reminder, I’ve added this print to our office with wonderfully liberating words. I spend a lot of time sitting at the desk pushing myself to just start and try things, and reading these words gives me courage to do so.
