When we went in for the the ultrasound yesterday morning I was VERY nervous. Mostly with unfounded nightmares of missing limbs or extra limbs or even better, no baby at all. When our baby showed up on the monitor we saw the head and arms right away and all of a sudden, I went from a bundle of nerves to being in a very happy place. It was so cool to see our baby, and I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that she is in my abdomen. So weird.
She looks great – all limbs accounted for (really longs legs!), organs present and apparently working, and very cute! It did take quite awhile though for the ultrasound tech, Heather, to determine that she was actually a girl. Heather would work on her checklist and see if our baby was still cross-legged every few minutes. After about 20 minutes she vigorously rubbed on my stomach to make the baby move. She moved a lot – but still kept her legs tightly together, although now they were stretched out all the way. After a few more minutes she tried the technique again, with optimal results.
I haven’t felt much movement in general, just every once in a while it feels like goldfish swimming around. Well after yesterday’s disruption to her space, I felt some serious kicking. She got me really good in the side and it hurt! I normally feel movement at night when I sleep on my stomach (I’ve yet to be able to kick that habit and so far it isn’t too much like sleeping on a watermelon). Yesterday I felt guilty enough after seeing her reaction to the ultrasound to give sleeping on my side a try. That was only mildly successful, but it eased my conscious.
After seeing our little girl, it has made her seem so much more real. We are very excited to welcome her to our family in a few more months, but I’m also grateful for the remaining time that we have as just the two of us.

Even after he was born my brain still couldn’t quite get wrapped around the idea that that little creature was what had been growing in my belly for nine months. It’s super cool, but super weird too!
Yay babies!!
