Nap time had turned into quiet exploration time for Emily…of my make-up, bathroom supplies, my closet. The first time I discovered the giant make-up mess I just walked away. The second time I took a picture. The third time it took me hours to realize that she had mascara on because she’s now adept at applying it.
Meanwhile I’ve been choosing between resting, reading, and working, during this nap time. I felt very rushed during the 45 minutes -1.5 hours of alone time that I eked out of the day, and was left with lots of clean up. Something had to change.
I came across an idea to have a Rest and Read Hour in the afternoon to be abided by all the inhabitants of the house. It is a magical hour where you either read a book or take a nap in your very own cozy spot. We’ve been giving it a try with an added Quiet Work Time to follow the 45 minutes of alone time. Emily and I come down to the kitchen table and work side-by-side with me on the computer and her with scissors, glue, paper, crayons, and pencils. We have a few kids audiobooks that we have experimenting with listening to but that skill is very much in development.
We still only have about 1.5 hours of ‘nap time’, but now the expectations are set for Emily and I to get some reading, resting, and work accomplished.
Yesterday we finished up and Nathan was still asleep so we made paper dolls. We will be growing our collection shortly.
