Oregano has an interesting history. It came to the United States after WWII with the servicemen who returned from Italy. Oregano is used in tomato sauces as well as egg, vegetable, bean or cheese dishes. My particular favorite use of oregano is in stromboli.
Ingredients:
- 8 slices baked ham
- 8 slices provolone
- 8 slices hard salami
- 1/2 cup mozzarella
- mayonnaise, mustard
- parmesan cheese
- oregano and paprika
- bread dough – your favorite kind
- 8 oz. more sandwich pepperoni
Directions:
Oil cookie sheet. Spread dough out to make rectangle. Shape not quite 9X13, maybe 7X10. Layer in this order on half:
- Salami
- Provolone cheese
- ham
- mozzarella
Lightly spread mayonnaise and mustard with knife on one side. Sprinkle parmesan cheese and oregano. Fold the two long sides together, pinch, and seal. Fold the short ends and pinch shut. You should have a long rectangular shape all enclosed. Flip over so the seam side is down. Sprinkle with salt, bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool down at least 5 minutes. Tastes great dipped in spaghetti sauce.
